Hockey Figures - NHL Legends Series 1

Following the recent announcement of their intention to produce a range of hockey figures featuring legends of the game, the McFarlane toys website - spawn.com - has now released images of the first set of NHL Legends. As well as announcing the first ‘regular’ size set of NHL Legends they have also confirmed the line-up for the first 12 inch set of NHL Legends figures.

Unsurprisingly, now they have the licence to do so, the first Legends set includes two separate versions of The Great One, Wayne Gretzky, one with the Oilers (blue jersey) and the other from his time at the Kings. In addition to these series 1 of the 12” NHL Legends range is exclusively Wayne. The figures for this are from the same teams as the smaller figures with the LA Kings one being the same figure in larger scale but the Edmonton one being a different pose and different jersey.

Of the other three players that are making up the first round of this set, there is one I haven’t particularly heard of before - Yvan Cournoyer of the Canadiens, one I have heard of but don’t know much about - Frank Mahovlich of the Leafs and one that is instantly recognisable to all goalie fans - Gerry Cheevers of the Bruins.

All three of these players are true ‘vintage’ players from the time before players wore helmets and goalie masks became what they are today. With this in mind, McFarlane Toys are going to have pull out all the stops in terms of sculpting faces and hair on these and from the look of these images they have pulled this off - in particular, the Gretzky figures look spot on!

Overall, this seems to be an interesting addition to the hockey figures produced by McFarlane and I think there is little doubt that those figures of Gretzky will be the most sought after once they are released which is expected in September.
