As an owner, he saved the, then bankrupt, Pittsburgh Penguins for a second time by taking up the ownership of the franchise and preventing it leaving the city of Pittsburgh. Then, as a player, following 3 years in ‘retirement’ he returns to the ice for the Penguins, taking up where he left off and leading his team to the Conference Finals. Mario Lemieux is a living legend, no doubt about it! Even if you forget his ongoing chronic back and the Hodgkin’s, his achievements in the sport of hockey are second only to Gretzky. When you add in the obstacles he has had to overcome you have, in my humble opinion at least, the best player ever.
